Connect Alabama, a behavioral health services and treatment finder application, provides individuals instant access to education, information and services related to substance use, mental health, and prevention. The app is funded through a partnership of the Alabama Department of Public Health, Alabama Department of Mental Health, and is created and managed by VitAL of The University of Alabama.
“Connect Alabama is an important tool, offering fast and reliable service to someone looking for help. It may take an individual many years to simply reach out for help with mental health issues or a substance use disorder. We need as many avenues as possible for an individual to seek treatment and information when they are ready to take the next step toward recovery,” said ADMH Commissioner Kimberly Boswell.
A special feature of the app is functionality even if the internet or data are not available. The application has built-in static information that is accessible anytime, without access to data or the internet, and will update as service and data become available for the user.
Features of the app include:
The home page of the application showcases a Hot Topic Banner, navigable sections of help, and filters to specify needs and locations.
The Helpline page displays click-to-call phone numbers. Each helpline has direct dial functionality and direct SMS to text the helpline, when applicable.
The services locator access page provides a directory for substance use, prevention, mental health, or medication drop off locations and includes services offered (outpatient, residential etc.), demographics and location of services.
Additional resources, education, and information including direct access to free Naloxone kits provided by Jefferson County Department of Health are available on the app. After watching a short video, a person can have the life-saving drug sent to the home and have on hand in case of an overdose.
The app is available for download on iOS through the app store and for Android devices via Google play.

988 is the national three-digit phone number for all mental health, substance use, and suicide crises, as of May 2025.
988 provides Alabama with the unique opportunity to fully integrate and intentionally align the state’s crisis system design and service delivery – linking individuals directly to critical services: someone to call, someone to respond, and somewhere to go.
Someone to call: 988
Call centers are located at AltaPointe Health in Mobile; in Birmingham at JBS in collaboration with The Crisis Center Birmingham; in Dothan with SpectraCare Health Systems; and in Huntsville at WellStone.
Someone to respond: Mobile Crisis Services
Somewhere to go: Crisis Centers offer the ability to walk-in, 24/7 for an individual with a mental illness, substance use, or suicidal crisis:
AltaPointe Behavioral Health Crisis Center (Mobile), WellStone Emergency Services Crisis Center (Huntsville), Carastar Health Crisis Center (Montgomery), Jefferson, Blount, St. Clair Mental Health Authority Craig Crisis Center (Birmingham) and SpectraCare Crisis Center (Dothan).
988 is more than just an easy-to-remember number—it’s a direct connection to compassionate, accessible care and support for anyone experiencing mental health-related distress – whether that is thoughts of suicide, mental health or substance use crisis, or any other kind of emotional distress. People can also dial 988 if they are worried about a loved one who may need crisis support.
988 calls are routed to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline centers in each state. 988 offers rapid access to behavioral health support through connection with trained crisis specialists.
988 is interwoven into the Alabama Crisis System of Care, as the first step and response in a crisis.
988 offers an opportunity to decouple policing from a mental health or substance use crisis. 988 is a vital resource for people experiencing a mental health emergency.
